lnhammer: the Chinese character for poetry, red on white background (Default)
    This, then, is the place--
Travelers and returners,
    Both unknown strangers
And those who know each other,
Parting at Meetinghills Gate.

—14 July 2009

A translation, based on ponies and discussion here, of Semimaru's poem from 100 Poems by 100 Poets. "Meetinghills" is the literal meaning of Ausaka (modern Osaka), a road station in a pass northeast of the Heian Japan capital of Kyoto.

About

Warning: contents contain line-breaks.

As language practice, I like to translate poetry. My current project is Chinese, with practice focused on Tang Dynasty poetry. Previously this was classical Japanese, most recently working through the Kokinshu anthology (archived here). Suggestions, corrections, and questions always welcome.

There's also original pomes in the journal archives.
