Original by Fujiwara no Sanesada, nephew of Toshinari (#83) and cousin of Teika (#97). The hototogisu is the lesser cuckoo, no relation to the European common cuckoo. Its name can be read as an exclamation, an address, or the subject of "called" without its case marker. As in earlier poems, ariake is dawn on the 16th of the lunar month, but this time the moon is explicit.hototogisu
