(untitled holiday poem)
As trawlermen on heaving seas haul net
Aboard before the nor'easter can freshen,
Then heel for harbor with all hatches set;
As teachers dismiss the class for winter session,
Close lesson planners, stretch their backs, then lock
The darkened classroom as they finally go;
As ranchers ride the hills to round up stock
And drive them to corrals before first snow;
As truckers check the weather and their chains
Before the last pass to their destinations;
As workers head for home by cars or trains
From offices of various vocations;
So we now travel home and wish for cheer
This holiday -- and all this coming year.
Best wishes for the new year (Gregorian) ahead of us.

A quick break for something seasonal: we used this on our holiday card this year. Working title was "Coming in for the Holidays" or just "Coming In," but neither really works, and yes, it's a sonnet.Best wishes for the new year (Gregorian) ahead of us.
