And yanno, Shirane even lists that mid-sentence rhetorical usage of ka/kawa after a question word (his examples are after izure and nani). Sometimes, it pays to look things up.

Fortuitous, but when I realized where I was going with #102 I came back to this to make sure I was being consistent (and then grinned).

As language practice, I like to translate poetry. My current project is Chinese, with practice focused on Tang Dynasty poetry. Previously this was classical Japanese, most recently working through the Kokinshu anthology (archived here). Suggestions, corrections, and questions always welcome.
