Rime Sparse 9

When the planet that marks off the hours
returns to dwell in Taurus in the spring,
from his flaming horns there drops a power
that clothes the world in a fresh coloring.

It's not just those opening up outside,
the riverbanks and hills, that he makes flower,
but inside us, where daylight never bides,
he too makes pregnant with his earthly shower

that we may yield fruits of a similar kind.
Thus she who among ladies is a sun above
cast from her lovely eyes those rays that plumb

me, so creating thoughts, words, and acts of love:
but whichever way her looks inclined,
spring came not for me, nor ever comes.

Another from Petrarch via Durling's pony (I think his was the only translation consulted for this one). Original here (back up?).

Incidentally, I'm pretty sure there's a way to adjust the CSS of this journal to let me type
DATE
instead of
DATE
every time, but I haven't figured out how. Anyone know? Or is that an only paid user feature?
