(Original author unknown.) Much head-scratching from the commentariat over this one, but the usual explanation is that the speaker is asking for the consolation of at least looking at the already fallen leaves -- thus advancing the cycle. "Remember" doesn't really bring out the sense of recalling with admiration or fondness of shinobu.koishiku wa
