lnhammer: the Chinese character for poetry, red on white background (Default)
[personal profile] lnhammer
If one December someone on the Moon,
Perhaps a child, about to go back in
Seeing the surface washed with blue earthlight,
Looked up and then reached out to catch the Earth

Before remembering -- wouldn't she think
Here's heaven's ornament and, better than
A alien tree or row of candlelights,
A fitting emblem for the season there?

—31 December 1996

Used on our holiday card for 1997. I like to say that I've written exactly two actual science fiction stories; "Her First Affair" is one, and this is the other.

This is a beautiful poem; makes me want to draw a picture. And yay, link to a story.

Heeey... that's not a story, that's another poem! Fine, I'll put on my poem-reading brain.

About

Warning: contents contain line-breaks.

As language practice, I like to translate poetry. My current project is Chinese, with practice focused on Tang Dynasty poetry. Previously this was classical Japanese, most recently working through the Kokinshu anthology (archived here). Suggestions, corrections, and questions always welcome.

There's also original pomes in the journal archives.
