Seeing Off a Friend, Li Bai (Tang Shi #102)
Monday, 18 May 2020 08:32Blue mountains piled above the northern wall,
White waters coiling east around the city:
There is but one way to depart this land,
Ten-thousand li of journey, alone, disheveled—
I think of travelers in the floating clouds
And long for my old friends in the setting sun.
Waving your hand, you yourself now go,
Your team of horses whinnying away.
送友人
青山横北郭,
白水绕东城。
此地一为别,
孤蓬万里征。
浮云游子意,
落日故人情。
挥手自兹去,
萧萧班马鸣。
If not for the title, I’d likely understand this as the speaker departing (the pronoun in l.7 is “(one)self”).
