lnhammer: the Chinese character for poetry, red on white background (Default)
[personal profile] lnhammer
A tired man drops
his stringless bow, silently,
and picks up his sword.

-=-

An old woman prays
by the fjord for forgiveness
from him she loved most.

-=-

Quick, like Skarphedin
sliding across the river
with axe held ready.

-=-

The chieftain watches
his household gods wash ashore
in a smoky bay.

-=-

A solitary man
on a hill, wrapped in a cloak,
evaluates gods.

-=-

Behind two women
long cloaks brush over the snow,
leaving a trail.

These are wonderful--the first and last especially, for me.

About

Warning: contents contain line-breaks.

As language practice, I like to translate poetry. My current project is Chinese, with practice focused on Tang Dynasty poetry. Previously this was classical Japanese, most recently working through the Kokinshu anthology (archived here). Suggestions, corrections, and questions always welcome.

There's also original pomes in the journal archives.
