against the rocks by fierce winds,
so am I alone
broken apart by the pain
those times I think about her!

Original by Minamoto no Shigeyuki. Soundwise, the original is absolutely lovely, with its repeated mi and mo and no syllables. Pivot: itami = extreme (in an archaic sense and declension) / pain. The "alone" is pointing at how it's only the waves that break on the rocks. Literally, what he thinks about is "things," but clearly he means to make it All About Her.kaze o itami
iwa utsu nami no
onore nomi
kudakete mono o
omou koro kana
