So was it because
I slept full of longing that
I saw that person?
If I'd known it for a dream,
I would not have awoken!

Original by Ono no Komachi. One of Komachi's more straightforward poems, a direct statement relying on conception instead of wordplay (though note the multiple polysyllabic verbs). This appears in Tales of Ise as sent by an anonymous women to a man who no longer visited her, which changes what appears to be a wistful complaint into a pointed jab.omoitsutsu
