Kokinshu #218
Tuesday, 13 March 2012 07:16 A poem from the poetry contest at the house of Prince Koresada.
The autumn flowers
of the bush-clover have bloomed.
The deer on the peaks
of Takasago's mountains --
shouldn't they be calling now?

Original by Fujiwara no Toshiyuki. There are many places named Takasago ("high sands" = "dunes"), but the most famous is a hilly coastal district west of Kobe. The combination of the strongly affirmative inflection of "bloom" and the speculative inflection of "call" is kinda funky -- why not be more concerned with the deer near the flowers you can see?akihagi no
