lnhammer: the Chinese character for poetry, red on white background (Default)
A poem from the poetry contest at the house of Prince Koresada.

    O mists of autumn,
do not rise up this morning:
    I would from afar
gaze upon the autumn leaves
of the oaks of Mt. Saho.

—19 June 2012

Original author unknown. The Nara area is especially noted for its oak trees. More literally, the speaker wants to see the leaves "even while in another place."

About

Warning: contents contain line-breaks.

As language practice, I like to translate poetry. My current project is Chinese, with practice focused on Tang Dynasty poetry. Previously this was classical Japanese, most recently working through the Kokinshu anthology (archived here). Suggestions, corrections, and questions always welcome.

There's also original pomes in the journal archives.
