lnhammer: the Chinese character for poetry, red on white background (Default)
Sleeping in spring, I missed the dawn.
Everywhere I hear birds call—
Last night, it was the wind and rain:
Who knows how many flowers fell.

春晓
春眠不觉晓,
处处闻啼鸟。
夜来风雨声,
花落知多少。

The original has no “I” or any other people, but that’s the (by far) easiest reading. (Another almost rhyme!)

About

Warning: contents contain line-breaks.

As language practice, I like to translate poetry. My current project is Chinese, with practice focused on Tang Dynasty poetry. Previously this was classical Japanese, most recently working through the Kokinshu anthology (archived here). Suggestions, corrections, and questions always welcome.

There's also original pomes in the journal archives.
